Ripple Connection Question

Saint NicholasImage via Wikipedia

Ripple Connection Questions are a unique way to engage people in conversation. Whether with a complete stranger or someone you already know, but want to know better, using Ripple Connection Questions (RCQ) accelerate the dialogue and deepen the connection. The questions are by design, fun to ask and fun to answer, and can take your connection to an entirely new level. Come on, break out of that shell of yours and start Rippling.

As the holidays quickly approach it got me thinking of how exciting Christmas time was for me as kid. And if you and I were sitting down over a cup of coffee and you were to ask me a holiday slanted Ripple Connection Question (hmm like the one I am about to give you) you would undoubtedly learn something about me and hopefully find a connection point or two that would strengthen our connection to one another. That's what Ripple Connection Questions are designed for - to help you humanize the process of connecting with others.

So as the holidays approach take the time to connect with those who are most important to you. If you really want to learn something about them pull out this little ditty and watch as their eyes light up and the stories begins to flow.

WHAT'S A FAVORITE HOLIDAY
MEMORY THAT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT
IT IT INSTANTLY BRINGS A SMILE TO YOUR FACE?

Here's hoping that you will not only use this question but answer it and consider sharing it with us by posting a comment!

Ripple Connection Question Of The Week

Ripple Connection Questions are a unique way to engage people in conversation. Whether with a complete stranger or someone you already know, but want to know better, using Ripple Connection Questions (RCQ) accelerate the dialogue and deepen the connection. The questions are by design, fun to ask and fun to answer, and can take your connection to an entirely new level. Come on, break out of that shell of yours and start Rippling.

This past weekend Zachary, my 9.999 year old (he turn's 10 tomorrow), and I were watching an interesting show on the History Channel about Benjamin Franklin and the technology he created. I was fascinated with how many modern day conveniences could be directly linked back to this amazing founding father. What was even more interesting was watching Zach take it all in and absorb it like a sponge.

After the program ended Zach turned to me and said, "Benjamin Franklin sure thought a lot didn't he? And what he didn't know he went out and tried to learn all that he could about something. He never gave up until he got an an answer to whatever question he was asking. I think that is so cool." Indeed.

It got me thinking about this week's Ripple Connection Question. How many of us think that just because we are out in the "real world" that we no longer have to learn new things. Oftentimes I ask that question at companies I am asked to speak at and I get answers like learning was for school or who has time to learn new things when there is work to be done. It's quite sad when you really think about it.

I myself equate learning to living. Though I don't have the insatiable appetite that Benjamin Franklin obviously had, I was inspired by the program and my son's enthusiasm to apply that same eagerness to learning to his life. I certainly hope it sticks - given the kind of kid he is I am sure it will.

But it did get me thinking about this week's Ripple Connection Question so with no further adieu:

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU
WOULD LIKE TO LEARN
ABOUT OR LEARN TO DO?

I hope you will ask this question and watch the doors of connection open wide open when you do. Heck, don't forget to answer the question yourself and if inclined, post it here!

Ripple Connection Question Of The Week

Ripple Connection Questions are a unique way to engage people in conversation. As I watch the events of this weekend unfold, I can't help but think of the people who are and will be inevitably be affected by Hurricane Ike. Ever since Hurricane Katrina the power and force with which Mother Nature can impose her incredible strength and determined destruction is certainly humbling and scary when you think about it.

I can't imagine what it would be like to be forced to leave my home. As I look around today I see all that I have worked for and all that I treasure. Sure you can make the argument that it's just stuff but it's my stuff and I wouldn't want to lose it under any circumstances.

But what if you were forced to leave your home and you could only take what you could pack into your car or suitcase? That question has been on my mind for obvious reasons so I figured why not use it as this week's Ripple Connection Question:

WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU
IF YOU WERE FORCED TO EVACUATE
YOUR HOME?

I look forward to hearing how you might answer this question. I know for me, as long as I have my family, my computer, my "idea journal" and my ability to live another day, the stuff that I own can always be replaced.

If you have been affect by this weekend's storm, know that you are in my family's thoughts and prayers.

So I would imagine that most of you, like me, had an enjoyable Labor Day Weekend. Mine was spent watching lots and lots of college football, U.S. Open Tennis, NASCAR and even made it out to watch my beloved Albuquerque Isotopes come to town to beat our local Round Rock Express AAA baseball team. It was a great weekend filled with lots of downtime with the family and some much needed relaxation.

Labor Day marks the official end of the summer (sad) and it's the last big holiday before Thanksgiving so hopefully none of us wasted it. So that got me thinking about this week's Ripple Connection Question.

What was the funnest thing you
did this Labor Day Weekend?

This question will undoubtedly give you insight into the people you want to connect with. People love talking about their adventures so why not use this week as an opportunity to stir your conversation in a completely different direction and see what turns up. You may just discover that person you are connecting with has similar hobbies and interests to yours. How cool would that be?

Shortcut The Connection

So if you are a regular reader of my BLOG you know that I often post different Ripple Connection Questions that we use throughout my public and private 8 Minute Ripple events. These connection questions are designed to help people engage and connect quicker and with a more positive result than what one might expect. I personally believe the questions, when used appropriately, help shortcut the connection and relationship building process and open up a world of current and future dialogue jumping off points.

Let's face it in today's society we aren't very good at communicating. Sure we meet people, we talk to them, we exchange pleasantries but at the end of the day how much do we really learn or know about them? For most people, especially in at a networking or social event, the depth of knowledge that they learn from the people they meet rarely goes beyond what the other person does for a living or who they work for. I call that surface information and surface information nets very little relevant or substantive insight. Plus let's face it....it's often boring and uninteresting information when you come right down to it.

So why do it?

Well, for most people it's the only way we know. It's our default strategy to ask someone what they do or where they work just to have something, anything to say. We push and we prod about surface subjects and wonder why we aren't making the kinds of connections we really want or need in our lives or careers.

People cross you path in life for a reason. It's up to you to figure out why. Ripple Connection Questions or heck, just any insightful question, that helps you cut through the surface layer of someone to learn something, anything meaningful has to be better. Doesn't it? Don't answer that question because you already deep down inside know the answer.

There is an old saying that people do business with people they know, like and trust. Well whether you are pushing a sales quota, building a business or looking for your next job, that saying has meaning for us all. The kinds of connections we make are dependent on our ability to make them the most that they can and are intended to be. I would submit that in order to do that, you have to gain some better insight into the people you are meeting and make your interactions relevant.

Very little or dare I say it....no relevance comes from surface connections. So quit making them.

Dig deeper.

Ask better, more insightful questions.

Don't let opportunities pass you by.

Don't make that one interaction your only interaction. Call them following an event - ask them to lunch or out for coffee. Do something to keep the momentum going and keep exploring, learning and connecting.

Enjoy the process of connecting and people will enjoy connecting with you.

So with no further adieu....this week's Ripple Connection Question is:

WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO BE A STAR IN?

I get the greatest reaction when I use this question as a means to connect. You literally get to watch people mentally teleport themselves to the secret fantasy of being whatever it is they really want to be. For some it might mean being a highly sought after nationally known speaker. For some its a rock star. For others its shooting that winning basket or hitting that game winning homer. Still for others its something more personal as was the case with a woman I met recently at a conference. She just wanted to be a star in the eyes of her kids; to be thought of as cool and fun to hang around despite their teenage bravado. She actually teared up when she shared her answer with me.

Whatever it is...its a great connection question and one that is certain to open another person up in ways you could never imagine.

Give it a try. You will be glad you did!

The questions are by design, fun to ask and fun to answer, and can take your connection to an entirely new level. Come on, break out of that shell of yours and start Rippling.

So with no further adieu....this week's Ripple Connection Question is:

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO
BE DOING IF YOU WEREN'T
DOING WHAT YOU ARE
DOING RIGHT NOW?

I love using this question at networking events and pulling it out before someone can ask me "So Steve what do you do?" The uniqueness of the order of words is always perfect for creating a temporary brain scramble on someone who is used to the same old boring way of networking. This question gives people a reason to pause and to really contemplate what you have just asked them and the answers you will get will simply amaze you.

For example here are some I recently received which gave me great insight and massive opportunities to stir some new connections in an entirely different (and much more fun) direction at a recent networking event (I had to attend).

Ted - Insurance Agent - Would rather be a gourmet cook with a little bistro in the South of France

Marianne - Army Recruiter - Would rather be a professional skydiving instructor and work only with kids from broken homes to teach them what is possible when they push themselves

Mark - Salesman - Would like to be a whitewater raft guide. He only feels at true peace when he is the mountains.

Suzanne - Stay-At-Home-Mom - Would rather travel the country (with kids in tow of course!) promoting a children's book that teaches valuable lessons.

No matter who the question is asked of you will undoubtedly find that everyone can come up with something that person would rather be doing. And the details of what that something is can open up a world of possibilities and connection for you both. Give it a try this week and see what kinds of Ripples this powerful little question can create for your connections!

So with no further adieu....this week's Ripple Connection Question is:

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR MOST
FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MEMORIES?

This time of year as the Super Bowl approaches, it would be easy to say football for me. I fancied myself a backyard (or actually front yard) football hero. I had this old Nerf football that I would use and I would, for hours, self-hike the ball to myself and toss it on my parents house and wait for it to come down for a completion. Passes that were thrown on the first story were good for a single completion; I needed two for a first down. Passes that were thrown on the second story would come down much faster and much more unpredictable which made them so much more fun to catch. They of course were good for an automatic first down so I went for them a lot! Hey no guts, no glory right?

I would sit out there for hours and pretend I was leading my beloved Dallas Cowboys down the field for that Super Bowl win. I especially loved this time of year as a snow game added to the flare and excitement of a Steve Harper, Dallas' overlooked and yet undiscovered future franchise quarterback, led win.

I didn't win all of them as to make it fair, I had to play both teams; Dallas and whoever they might be up against that week. And in the battle field of the Harper front yard stadium, there were many tough opponents and very few easy wins. But the wins that I did have will be forever etched in my mind and the memories will forever make me smile.

So what about you? What's your answer to this week's Ripple Connection Question? Use this question with the people who cross you path in life and I guarantee you will open up a plethora of great material from which a deeper more meaningful relationship can be built.

Ripple Connection Question Of The Week

How about we collectively make 2008 the year of connection? What do you say?

Seriously, why not use this brand spanking new year as our launch pad to make deeper more meaningful connections with the people who cross our path or already in our life somehow? The connections we make, and make better, will absolutely springboard you into something amazing for 2008 I promise. Why not use the Ripple Connection Questions to help you get started?

So with that in mind, this week's Ripple Connection Question Of The Week is:

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT
THE UPCOMING YEAR?

For me this is an easy one to answer....

It's all the possibilities that 2008 holds for me. I want to do more trainings, more workshops, give more talks and speeches, write my second (and maybe a third) book. But most of all...the one thing that excites me most about 2008 is all the new and incredibly helpful people I plan to bring into my life through the power of connection. Yes, its the stories I will hear, the faces I will see, the experiences I will have by not fearing to take a chance and connect with someone new. After all, I do believe that someone or something will have brought them into my path for a reason. It's the discovery part of why that makes it most exciting for me.

So what about you? What is your answer?

Holiday Ripple Connection Question of The Week

Since the holidays are right around the corner and Christmas is everywhere you look, I find that this week's question gives me amazing insight to the people I want to know better. Give it a try and just get ready, because no matter the age of the person you are asking, that little gleam of possibility will invariably enter their eye. Just like it did for us all as we stood in line at that mall and found ourselves waiting to ask Santa the bring us the toys we most wanted at the time.

So have some fun this week asking this one....

SO WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE
SANTA TO PUT UNDER YOUR TREE
THIS CHRISTMAS?

I hope you will not only use this question this week but will post a comment and let us know YOUR answer to it!!!

You never know....Santa may just be a regular reader of my BLOG!!!

What is one childhood fantasy
that you still secretly wish
had actually happened?

Let me let my readers in on a little secret. I was a super hero wanna be. I am sure many of you were. But I honestly used to dream of being called in as a replacement for Peter Parker. I always thought he was a bit of a limp noodle and someone like me could spice up the old Spidey image. And...with me at the helm there was no way the Justice League wouldn't come calling.

Like I said.....fantasy. Though I still think I could look pretty darn buff in the old tights!

What about you? What wish do you still secretly hold onto?

Who do you know in your
personal or professional life right
now that just needs a "DO OVER?"

Tell them it's okay!

Then decide what you can
do to help them?

We all need a do over in our lives. Heck, if you are like me, you may need many of them throughout your life. My guess is you right now know someone who could use a friendly smile, a kind word and some encouragement that a do over is not only possible...but necessary. Let them know you are there to help. Trust me, the Ripple you create will leave you both feeling amazing and you will form a bond that will last a lifetime.

The questions are by design fun to ask and fun to answer and can take your connection to an entirely new level. Come on, break out of that shell yours and start Rippling.

Trust me you will be glad you did!

This week's Ripple Connection Question is....

What was your favorite "thing"
to do when you were a kid?

Getting someone to reconnect to their childhood and through their own stories, allows you to journey back with them as the mentally relive and retell of their childhood adventures. Using this kind of connection question is one of the quickest (and neatest) ways to deepen a connection with someone you want to know better.

So my answer to this question is.....

Playing SPY. My friend Kevin and I could play secret agent spies for hours and never get bored. Whether it was sneaking into the backyard of the "Hippie House" or trying to find the secret dungeon door that the "witch on the corner" had to have (we just knew it!), we did it all and then some! Our bikes were our James Bond-enhanced sports cars and our fort was of course....headquarters. We were pretty hot stuff with gadgets and trinkets that would make your head spin even today.

I miss those days and think of them often. It was just plain good old American boy fun. Oh the trouble we use to cause! But alas I can tell you no more because us spies have a credo of secrecy that we are sworn to protect.

Hope to hear your answers to this week's RCQ!

Trust me you will be glad you did!

This week's Ripple Connection Question is....

What is one of your guilty pleasures?

You can really learn a lot about someone by asking this question. I once had a client that I had worked with for some time but wanted to get to know better. I dusted off this old question during a lunch meeting and was taken on a twenty minute journey on this person's passion for open houses. Apparently this mild mannered CFO was a tireless admirer of other people's homes and her weekend was often filled with open house after open house tours. She called them inspiration and idea tours.

A short time after learning about my client's propensity for open houses my company landed a fairly large real estate publication company as a client. I asked my new client if they would be willing to sign up my other client to receive their weekly publication which outlined the current week's home listings and had an open house preview section. They agreed and you would have thought my CFO client was given the winning lottery ticket she was so appreciative.

Needless to say, that little connection point continues to pay-off for me to this day. Amazing what a little Ripple Connection Question can do to positively alter and forever change the dynamic of a relationship.

The Power of Ripple Connection Questions

Right now there are people that you need to meet...you want to meet....you have to meet....and yet you aren't meeting them. Why? I have said it before and I will say it again that people cross our path in life for a reason. It's what we do with them when they show up that is the question.

A little less than two years ago I embarked on a journey of sorts to help people find new ways to connect. To help people bridge a conversation with a complete stranger and/or expand their knowledge and depth of awareness with the people they already knew but would like to know better. So I started sharing some of my own Ripple Connection Questions; questions that I developed for my 8 Minute Ripple Connection Events right here on the BLOG.

Well I have received some awesome responses to these questions and how people are using them. The stories and the results that people share have been overwhelmingly positive as more and more people start to understand that setting oneself apart from the rest of the herd can mean the difference between just living or living a more fulfilling and rewarding life. It's true...the questions help set the stage and springboard the relationship building process whether it's meeting someone new for the first time, making a favorable first impression on a job interview, making that first date anything but awkward or deepening the relationship with one's spouse, children or aging parents in a whole new way.

I am honored that so many of you have found the courage to use the Ripple Connection Questions in your life and I love hearing your stories so please keep them coming. If you aren't using the questions to make the impact you want in your life let me encourage you now to go back and search at the top of this BLOG for Ripple Connection Questions or check out my online store for first officially released set of questions that are now available for sale.

No matter whether you use my questions or come up with some of your own....just do something to not let the opportunities that life has afforded you pass you by. People are put in our path for a reason and opening that mouth and engaging them somehow is the first step. The uniqueness of what comes out of your mouth is what insures that it isn't the first and last step.

Sparklers Light Neighborhood & New Friendships?

You would not believe how many people I work with that say they not only have a hard time meeting new people for their network but barely (if at all) know the people that they call their neighbors. How sad is that? Sad but an unfortunate reality of our time.

There was a time when all neighbors knew what everyone else was up to. The next door neighbor became surrogate parents to their neighbor's kids and vice versa. Everyone said good morning when they left for work and people got together for morning coffee, afternoon barbeques and looked out for one another. There was a general feeling of caring back in the day.

What happened?

Neighborhoods lost their mojo. More families broke up. People started becoming less social. Neighbors suddenly became people you gave the occasional nod to while mowing the lawn but you couldn't recall the name of their kids much less their dog.

Your neighbors represent a significant first step in helping you expand your personal and professional network. So how do you get to know a neighbor that you don't know that well?

Here are some suggestions to try out tomorrow....The Fourth of July!

  • Invite your neighbors to a good old fashioned home made ice cream social
  • Throw a BBQ (or better yet....schedule a BBQ competition & neighborhood potluck)
  • Ask your neighbor over for a beer
  • Buy or make some July 4th cup cakes and take them over to your neighbor just because
  • Buy a whole bunch of sparklers and distribute them to all the neighbors with instructions to stand outside at a specific time and salute this great country together as neighbors
  • Just do something that gives you a reason to open that mouth and say something; perhaps and this is only a suggestions...use some of the Ripple Connection Questions you have read in this BLOG. Hmmm....sounds like a plan doesn't it? (SMILE!)

Your neighbors represent a significant opportunity to grow your personal and professional network of people. They are the most readily available and accessible so why not take the initiative and reach out?

The Fourth of July when everyone here in America celebrates for one day our country's independence is a great opportunity to create a little bang with your connecting fireworks and see what pretty colors and opportunities come from it. Just think of the Ripples you might create!

Happy Fourth of July to you and yours!!!

Ripple Connection Question of the Week

Given that I am back home in Albuquerque I figured it was appropriate to focus on a Ripple Connection Question that is relevant to what I am experiencing this week.

What is one of your
fondest memories of
your childhood home?

For me it was the underground fort. My best friend Kevin Massis and I built a fort that was awesome! We had escape hatches, a common war room and our own personal rooms and "king" seating. It was the coolest thing ever! We had many adventures and of course the infamous FORT WARS! Yes we engaged in hand to hand genuine dirt clod bombings of other kid's forts. Of course we also had to protect our Taj Majal fort from falling victim to some enemy attack. Oh those were the days and coming home this week and standing on the sacred spot that our fort had been on really brings me back.

So what's your answer to the question? Just how much might you discover about someone you want to know better by asking them this question.

Ripple On!!!
